Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome back! The staff
and I look forward to seeing you again. We especially look forward to meeting
those of you that are new to Westmore. Please stop by and say "hello" when
you visit the school. There are several newcomers to our team. We are excited
to welcome them and encourage you to get to know them.
We're All In This Together!" is the theme for the year. Each of us plays
an important role in educating our youth. We ALL have a stewardship to guide
the youth of our community and ensure their success. Westmore is your school. We are here to serve you and
the children of our community.
Westmore's tradition of focusing first on the child continues with added emphasis on involving
the parent. We welcome Mrs. Jennifer Asplund, our new PTA president who will
help us establish a strong parent volunteer program. We recognize and respect the role that
each parent plays in a child's education. Parents, I invite you to actively participate
with your child's teacher and enjoy the experience of watching your kids grow and learn.

Purpose
of Booklet
[

This
booklet is designed to give information about Westmore School policies. Please
review these
policies with your children so that they will become familiar with
these rules and have a successful year. Please save this book for reference
throughout the year.
Accidents
or Illness[
Menu
]
- Whenever
a serious accident or illness occurs, the school will attempt to contact
the parent first and then others who have been designated on the Health
and Emergency Information Sheet filed in the office.
- In the event of emergencies or illness, calls
will be made in this order:
- the home
- the mother's or father's work
- neighbors or relatives listed
on the Health and Emergency Information sheet
If accident or illness is life threatening and we are unable to contact anyone listed on the Health and Emergency
Information sheet, the school will call an ambulance.
- Students need to be picked up by the parent
or person designated by the parent. By District policy, we cannot send the student home; they
must be picked up and signed out at the school office.
- Please keep us informed of any telephone
number changes.
Attendance
policy
[
Menu
]
The
Alpine School District Board of Education and Westmore Elementary School
recognize that
regular attendance at school increases the opportunities for students
to profit from their educational programs. Frequent absences of
students from the day-to-day classroom experience disrupts their
instructional learning processes. The benefits of instruction once
lost, are often difficult to regain. The entire process of education
requires a continuity of instruction, class participation, learning
experiences and study. The following policies should help:
- Tardiness -
Students are expected to be at school on time. Tardiness is
counter-productive to the student, the rest of the class and the teacher. If
a student is is late, please send a note to the teacher explaining the
tardiness.
- Early
Arrivals - Early
arrival at school is discouraged since no formal supervision is
provided. Students are not to arrive more than fifteen
minutes before the start of school. This would mean 8:00
a.m.students would arrive no earlier 7:45 a.m. unless they are eating breakfast,
which begins at 7:40 a.m. Students who begin school at 9:15 a.m. should arrive no earlier than 9:00 a.m.
Those eating breakfast should arrive between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m.
- Students Arriving at School - On normal
or "outside days," students should wait outside by their classroom door until it is opened.
On "inside days" (bad weather), students should wait in the hall by the office until
the bell rings, then use the inside doors. We have color-coded flags for these days.
A Green Flag represents an "outside day." A Red
Flag represents an "inside day." We will post the colored flags inside and outside the building.
- Absences
- It is not required that
you call the school when your student is absent, unless you anticipate a long illness
(more than two (2) days).
- Teachers
will contact the home after three (3) consecutive student absences.
- Excessive
absences ( more
than 10 total absences )
will be referred to the principal, who will contact parents by letter to determine
what action is needed.
- Closed Campus - Students should not
leave the school grounds from the time school begins in the morning until it ends in the afternoon
without permission from the principal's office. Please provide a written note to the teacher and
the office if your child will be going home for lunch.
- End of School Day
- No student will be kept after
school longer than 15 minutes without prior approval of the parents. A phone call could constitute
approval.
- Students
need to leave the school grounds immediately following school since
no formal supervision is provided.
Bad Checks
[
Menu
]
- Alpine
School District uses ePartner Net Collection Agency to collect on
all bad checks issued to any school.
- There
is a $15.00 charge plus collection fees for all bad checks.
- We will
not be accepted from patrons who have unpaid bad
checks.
Bicycles, Skate Boards, Roller
Blades, Scooters
[
Menu
]
- Students
riding bicycles, scooters or skateboards to school should ride in a safe
manner and walk them as they enter the school grounds.
- All bicycles
and scooters should be locked in the bicycle racks located on the north
and west sides of the school and left there until time for students to
return home.
- Students
should obey traffic safety rules (i.e. not riding down the middle of the
road, getting off at crosswalks and walking bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.
- At
recess time, students should not play around or on the bicycle racks or
ride their bicycles, scooters, or skateboards.
- Students with roller blades, scooters or skateboards should go directly
to their classroom and put them away. Rollerblades, "heelies," or
anything with wheels must be removed and shoes put on as students enter
and leave the school playground.
Testing Days
[
Menu
]
Please avoid pulling out of school on testing days. It makes it
difficult for teachers to reschedule time to make up the tests. Remember
testing dates: September 18-22, IOWA Testing and Apr. 30 - May
4, State Core Testing.
Check Out of Students
[
Menu
]
Parents must come to the school
office to pick up their children if they need to take them during school hours.
This is the checkout procedure:
- Parents
come to the office and sign the checkout log and tell secretary the
name of their child and the teacher.
- The secretary will call the classroom and have
the child sent to the office.
- Do
not call and ask that your child walk home or meet you outside in front of the school. This
is an Alpine School Board of Education policy. For the child's safety, please do not ask us to do otherwise.
Classroom Treats
[
Menu
]
Special
treats for birthdays and holidays are permitted with permission of the classroom
teacher. However, we are required by the State Board of Health
to serve only treats prepared by a person with a food handler's permit. To
insure student safety, birthday treats should be store-bought.
