Alpine School District is committed to math instruction that results in mathematically proficient students who have mastered the Utah
State Core Content Standards and Intended Learning Outcomes. A
mathematically proficient student is able to understand concepts, compute efficiently, apply math knowledge to solve real-world problems, and use reasoning to explain and justify solutions.
We believe that no single program offers all the aspects of instruction needed to produce mathematical proficiency; therefore, we support a balanced math philosophy. Balanced math endorses instructional practices that correspond with student needs. With the state core as a guide and a text as a resource, the teacher plays a pivotal role in making professional judgements to balance instruction with the sue of appropriate strategies, activities, and methodologies.
Alpine School District's math scores exceed the state average in math. We recognize that there are many strengths in our current approach to teaching mathematics that we will maintain. These include:
- understanding mathematics through inquiry-based tasks that are linked to real world context
- showing work using a variety of tools and strategies
- provide frequent opportunities for mathematical expression through flexible grouping and class discussion
- assessing student learning in a variety of ways
- participating in ongoing professional development
We also realize that there is room for improvement as
we seek for a more balanced approach. These revisions include:
- using explicit, focused objectives, direct teaching methods when appropriate, and review techniques as needed
- increasing student performance on mastery of basic facts, solving for acccuracy, and using tradtional algorithms
- improving parent/school communication
- continuing professional development for successful teaching practices
Schools will choose from two programs that closely align with Alpine School District's Balanced Math philosophy and the state core to
best meet the needs of their community.
As parents, teachers, and students work toward realizing the vision of balanced math, students will achieve a higher level of mathematical proficiency, be able to use mathematics to make sense of the world around them, and lay a foundation for future success in mathematics.
