Lost and Found [Menu]
Our Lost and Found Box outside the school auditorium is overflowing with articles of clothing. If your family has lost articles, please come by the school and check the box.
Please label coats, sweaters, sweatshirts and other seasonal articles of clothing with your student's name. It will make it easier to locate the owner of lost articles.
Parenting
Tip (from Helping Children Learn, January 2007). [Menu]
Allow
kids to solve conflicts.
It's tempting to interrup children's bickering
and solve problems yourself. But kids need to learn about conflict
resolution. Offer guidelines, such as, "Each child gets a chance to
explain his side" and "No being mean allowed." Help them find a solution.
School
Policy Change [Menu]
We have made some changes to our school policy. These changes have been made to improve accessiblility to classrooms and make dropping off and picking up students more convenient. The new policy allows students and parents to choose options that will work best for them.
Early Birds
Early Birds have three options for when they arrive at school in the morning:
- Wait quietly inside by the office.
- Wait quietly in the hall by their teacher's classroom door.
- Play outside until the bell rings.
Later Gators
Later Gators have two options for when they arrive:
- Wait quietly inside by the office.
- Play outside until the bell rings.
Waiting in the hall by their teacher's door will not be an option for Later Gators since school is already in session and we do not want the classes to be disturbed.
End of the Day
When it is time for students to go home, they will again need to make a choice about which exit route will be best for them. To reduce noise and traffic in the halls, students are encouraged to use their teacher's outside classroom door when leaving the building. However, students will be allowed to walk through the halls after school if they need to. Students will need to make a responsible choice about which route will be best for them and their parents.
Hallway Behavior
Students
are expected to behave in an orderly and responsible manner in the hallways at all times, using quiet "inside" voices. Students who conduct themselves otherwise may be asked to use the exterior classroom doors instead of the hallways.
Red Flag Days
On
days when the weather or air quality is poor, red flags will be posted outside
the building. These flags are a signal to students that when they arrive at school in the morning they need to come in and wait inside. On red flag mornings, playing outside before school will not be one of the choices.
It is our hope that this new policy will allow students and parents easier access to the classrooms and make our before and after school transition times more convenient for everyone. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact your child's teacher.
Ways to Help the School Earn Money [Menu]
Toner Cartridge Recycling
Please save your empty inkjet, laser, fax and copier
cartridges for our school as we are participating in a recycling program called CARTRIDGES FOR KIDS! Students should bring
the empty cartridges to school in a ziplock bag. Parents can be involved by bringing in cartridges from their places of employment.
We encourage you to enlist the help of neighbors, friends, and area businesses by asking them to save their empty cartridges.
This project will continue through the reminder of the school year and you may continue to save cartridges throughout the summer
to turn in at the beginning of next school year. By participating, we benefit by earning extra cash for our school and by keeping these cartridges
out of our landfills!
Recycling
The school will continue to recycle newspapers, phone books, etc. in our
recycling bin in the parking lot.
We will also continue to recycle used printer cartridges, cell phones and now Laptops (Pentium 2 or greater & in working
condition w/charger).
We will also continue to collect Boxtops, and aluminum cans.
Thank you for helping with the school's recycling efforts.
Each household has received or will soon be receiving
a new phone book.
Smith's Earn & Learn
We will continue our partnership with
Smith's Food & Drug Stores. If you are a Fresh Values shopper at Smith's and have enrolled in the Earn & Learn program for Westmore
school, a small percentage of sales returns to the school throughout the year.
If you are not already registered with the Earn & Learn Fresh Values program, you will need
to enroll by filling out an enrollment form by calling Fresh Values customer service at 1-800-764-8897, or go online at
www.smithsoffdanddrug.com and designate Westmore Elementary.
Television
Broadcasts [Menu]
Westmore Elementary school has its very own channel 6 that broadcasts announcements throught the entire school. In addition to schoolwide announcements, Way to Go awards and Kids With Character and high fives will be annouced and certificates presented to students over the television. Students love it and we are very excited about this new technology which allows us a n ew way to communciating with our students.
Classroom
Treats [Menu]
Utah State Department of Health regulations (R392-100-2 Food Care)
prohibit the serving of homemade treats to children at school. The regulation states: "Food shall be obtained
from sources that comply with all laws relating to food and food labeling. Home
prepared foods are prohibited."
If treats are brought to school for activities such as birthday treats, class parties, special rewards, etc.,
they should be commercially prepared items, preferably individually wrapped in cellophane, paper, a box, etc.
It is certainly not required or expected that you send treats to school.
If you choose to do so, however, we would greatly appreciate your following these guidelines so that we will be in compliance with
Utah State Department of Health regulations.
Playground Safety [Menu]
We
have asked students to carry skates and skateboards and to walk bicycles and
scooters while on school property.
Thank you, students! This has made a tremendous difference in safety
on school grounds. Several patrons have commented on the positive impact this has made before and after school. Keep up the good work!
Note:
Rollerblades, or anything with wheels must be removed and shoes put on as
students enter and leave the school playground. "Heelies" worn to
school should have the wheels taken out while at school.
Also, each bike or scooter nees to be locked up in the bike racks
provided.
Cold
Weather Dress [Menu]
With the advent of cooler weather, we are asking that
parents send with their children clothing suitable for outside play. Children are encouraged and expected to play
outside during lunch and afternoon recesses if weather permits.
Please remind your students to wear their warm
clothing while playing outside. Recess duty supervisors have observed students playing outside without warm clothing.
On stormy days or air quality days, students will be kept inside the building
in thier classrooms playing quiet games or eading. If the weather is bad in the morning when students come to school, students
are permitted to wait inside the building in the foyer areas until the bell rings for them to go to class.
Flags are posted outside and inside the school building indicating whether
it is an outside or inside day. A red flag posted would mean it was an inside day.
Free
/ Reduced Lunch [Menu]
WHAT DOES TITLE 1 HAVE TO DO WITH FREE LUNCH?
Every year Westmore Elementary receives funding for Title I teachers, aides, reading and math programs, books and other
materials and supplies.
The amount of money received by the school for Title I is determined by the number of students who qualify
for free and reduced lunches.
Therefore, we are encouraging every family in our school who might qualify for free and reduced meals to fill
out an application and return it to the school. If you qualify and don't use the meals, Westmore will still benefit by receiving funding for the Title I program.
Pick up an application from the school office and return it as soon as possilbe. Funding for our school is determined in January, 2007, for the upcoming school year.
Help Westmore receive funding for Title I programs which enhance and supplement the
quality of education given to all of our chidlren by filling out and returning the application.

Reduce stress before school [Menu]
Is dashing out the door at the last minute part of your child's morning routine?
Here are some ways to make getting ready for school easier:
- Tape a folder to the refrigerator door.
Use it for school papers that need to be signed by parents. You check it at night and have your child check it in the morning.
- Have your child pack his backpack each evening and put it by the door.
- Set the checks in your house five minute fast.
Before long, everyone may forget the clocks are "wrong" and be on time -- or early!
Some parents have found it challenging to send an email to their child's teacher. To alleviate some of the frustration fo trying to send email to teachers without it being caught in the spam filter, please put "parent of" in the subject of the email you are sending and then add text afterward.
- "Parent of" is not case sensitive. It can be lower or upper case.
- It must be the first statement within the subject field.
- It does not
matter what is after the "of" statement.
We hope this will help parents be able to communicate with teachers with email.
If
you have any questions. Please contact your school and talk to the principal
for further help on the matter. Here are the email addresses to Westmore staff.
What
Should I Ask? (Parent Conference) [Menu]
When
the time comes for parent-teacher conferences, some parents may wonder what
they should talk about. To get more out of the conference and
to gain a better understanding of what you can do to help your child succeed,
consider asking some of the following questions at your child's conference:
- What is my child like during
the day? Does he or she participate in class discussions
/ activities?
- What are my child's best
/ worst subjects? How can I help him or her improve in
the areas that need work?
- What are the standards for my
child's grade level?
- How does my child interact with other children and adults?
- How much help should I provide on homework assignments?
- Is my child in different
classes or groups for different subjects? How are these
groups determined?
- How is student progress
measured?
How are these groups determined?
Are students assessed through test? Portfolio? Class participation? Projects?
- Is my child trying as hard as he or she can?
After
the conference, consider thanking the teacher with a note or a telephone call. This simple gesture will help establish an ongoing relationship with the teacher. Keeping
in touch with the teacher, even if things are going well, will undoubtedly
benefit a child's school experience.

5th Grade Program Placement for 2007-2008
Testing
for identification and placement of current 4th grade students into next
year's Alpine School District 5th Grade A.L.L. has been scheduled. A.L.L.
programs are designed to meet the needs of students who master academic skills
easily and who need more challenge than is offered in a regular class. An
informational flyer will be sent home with every 4th grade student listing
indicators for parents and students to consider when looking at teh possibility
of an A.L.L. placement as being a "good fit."
In order to have more current test data for
applications, and to provide uniformity and consistency in placement, all student applicants will be given an above grade level alternative form of the IOWA Test of Basic Skills.
This will extend the testing time to three and one half hours. Applications will be available from the front
office of every elementary school beginning Wednesday, January 3rd and must be submitted by Wednesday, January 24th. Applications
will also be available for downloading at the G/T website:
http://www.alpine.k12.ut.us/depts/curriculum/Services/GiftedTalented/
For
your planning, morning testing sessions will be offered on Saturday, February
3, at Cedar Ridge and Saratoga Shores Elementary Schools fro 8:30 to Noon,
and Saturday,
February 10 at Lindon Elementary at either 8:30 a.m. - Noon or 1:00 - 4:30
